Blair founded his own Chartered Accountant (CA) business in 2000 (now named Corkum Arsenault Crozier), and effective January 1, 2014, sold the business to his colleagues. He has established a new business, Blair Corkum Financial Planning Inc., while continuing as a Senior Advisor to Corkum Arsenault Crozier. Blair continues to offer financial advice to business owners (both new and existing) using his experience and training as a CA (now Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and as a financial planner. However, he refers year-end financial statement and tax return preparation, business plan preparation and similar engagements to his colleagues at Corkum Arsenault Crozier. His focus is now on the business owner as both an individual and as a business operator.  Working as a fee-only Registered Financial Planner (as well as a Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist when called to do so), his goal is ensuring that a business owner’s financial planning is appropriate on both a personal and business basis. Particular focus is on tax planning, risk management (creditor proofing), retirement planning, business succession and insurance needs.

Blair has been a Chartered Accountant since 1978, and acquired a number of additional accreditations since then. Prior working experience has always been with public accounting firms in Charlottetown and Halifax, including Corkum Arsenault Crozier and its predecessors, as well as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Coopers & Lybrand and Lyle Tilley Corkum. Blair has also been involved in a number of non-profit and charitable organizations throughout his career, and some of these are listed below

Blair has over 35 years of experience with businesses and it has been wide ranging, and of course, included starting and managing his own business, which many accountants have never done even though they provide advice on such matters. As you would expect, hands-on experience leads to more practical advice than can be obtained from a textbook. Some of his experience has included:

  • Design of internal controls for small businesses and not-for-profit organizations, particularly over banking and bookkeeping systems, to minimize risk of errors and fraud.
  • Business succession planning advice to business owners, both incorporated and unincorporated.
  • Special assignments to improve the accuracy and understandability of financial reports.
  • Advice to people starting a business, including publication of a booklet in 2001 titled “Let’s Start a Business Together in P.E.I.”
  • Negotiations for the purchase and sale of businesses, and assistance in acquisition of related financing.
  • Completion of business plans, business plans and financing.
  • Performance of diagnostic assessments of small businesses to identify problems and improve efficiency and profitability.
  • Provision of year-end financial statement and tax return preparation services, as well as auditing and reviewing financial reports.
