Planning Your Funeral – A Guide for You to Use
October 2015
By planning your funeral arrangements, you reduce the stress on your family at a very busy and emotional time for them. Please consider using my guide below. By prearranging your funeral, you can also control the cost. Your loved ones will only want the best for you, which can be very expensive. This is an opportunity for you to keep the cost within reason.
In addition, if you are concerned about costs, you should consider prepaying also. When you prepay, the money is placed in trust in accordance with provincial legislation. Check your local rules – in Prince Edward Island, the money must be placed in trust by the funeral home within 30 days of receipt, segregating it from the money used by the home to run their business. During that first 30 days, it is also protected from creditors, as set out in the government brochure available on this web site http://www.gov.pe.ca/photos/original/prearranged.pdf.
Compassionate and experienced personnel at your chosen funeral home can help you with your planning. However, if you wish to do some preplanning on your own, I have prepared this guide to help you, which you should then review with the director of your preferred funeral home. Also, keep in mind that your wishes should be flexible because circumstances change, and certain options may not be practical or available at the time of your death.
